Duas Qunut is a special supplication that is recited in the prayer, especially in the Witr prayer. The word “Qunut” means to stand before Allah or to be humble.

Duas Qunut Readings

There are different kinds of Qunut, and each has its own rules and uses just like duas iftitah.

Qunut Fajr

Qunut Fajr is the Qunut that is said after the second raka’ah of the Fajr prayer and before ruku’.

Based on the hadith that says the Prophet (SAW) taught this Qunut to Hasan bin Ali (RA), the majority of Imam Madzhab agrees with this.

Quoting from NU online, the law of the qunut is sunnah ab’adl. This means that if you forget to read, it is sunnah to make a prostration for forgetfulness before greeting at the final tahiyat.

This is also the view of the Shafi’i school, but the Hanafi school says that it is recommended but not required.

The wording of Qunut Fajr is as follows:

اللّٰهُمَّ اهْدِنِىْ فِيْمَنْ هَدَيْتَ وَعَافِنِى فِيْمَنْ عَافَيْتَ وَتَوَلَّنِىْ فِيْمَنْ تَوَلَّيْتَ وَبَارِكْ لِىْ فِيْمَا اَعْطَيْتَ وَقِنِيْ شَرَّمَا قَضَيْتَ فَاِنَّكَ تَقْضِىْ وَلاَ يُقْضٰى عَلَيْكَ وَاِ نَّهُ لاَ يَذِلُّ مَنْ وَالَيْتَ وَلاَ يَعِزُّ مَنْ عَادَيْتَ تَبَارَكْتَ رَبَّنَا وَتَعَالَيْتَ فَلَكَ الْحَمْدُ عَلٰى ما قضيت وأستغفرك وأتوب إليك وصلى الله على سيدنا محمد النبي الأمي وعلى آله وصحبه وسلم

Transliteration:
Allahumma ihdini fiman hadaita, wa’afini fiman ‘afaita, wa tawallani fiman tawallaita, wa barik li fi ma a’thaita, wa qini syarra ma qadhaita,

fa innaka taqdhii wa la yuqdha ‘alaik, wa innahu la yazillu man walaita, wa la ya’izzu man ‘aadaita,

tabarakta rabbana wa ta’alaita, falakal hamdu ‘ala ma qadhaita ,astaghfiruka wa atubu ilaik,

wa sallallahu ‘ala sayyidina muhammadin nabiyyil ummiyyi wa ‘ala alihi wa shahbihi wa sallam

Translation:
“O Allah, guide me among those whom You have guided, grant me health among those whom You have granted health, take me as an ally among those whom You have taken as allies, bless me in what You have given me, and protect me from the evil of what You have decreed.

For You decree and none can decree over You. And none can humiliate whom You have taken as an ally, nor can anyone honor whom You have taken as an enemy.

Blessed are You, our Lord and Exalted. Yours is all praise for what You have decreed. I seek Your forgiveness and I repent to You.

And may Allah send blessings and peace upon our master Muhammad, the unlettered prophet, and upon his family and companions.”

Qunut Nazila

Qunut Nazila is the Qunut that is said when bad things happen, like war, famine, plague, etc.

Most scholars agree that it is said after the ruku’ in any of the five daily prayers.

The Hanafi school prefers to say it before ruku’ in the last raka’ah of every prayer.

The words of Qunut Nazila are not set in stone, but they should fit the situation and include prayers for Muslims to be helped, protected, win, and be forgiven.

The wording of Qunut Nazila

When the tribe of Daws tried to kill the Prophet (SAW), he recited Qunut Nazila:

اللّٰهُمَّ إِنَّا نَسْتَعِينُكَ وَنَسْتَغْفِرُكَ وَنُؤْمِنُ بِكَ وَنَتَوَكَّلُ عَلَيْكَ وَنُثْنِئْ عَلَيْكَ الْخَيْرَ وَنَشْكُرُكَ وَلَا نَكْفُرُكَ وَنَخْلَعُ وَنَتْرُكُ مَنْ يّفْجُرُك

Transliteration:
Allahumma inna nasta’inuka wa nastaghfiruka wa nu’minu bika wa natawakkalu ‘alaika wa nuthni ‘alaikal khaira wa nashkuruka wa la nakfuruka wa nakhla’u wa natruku man yafjuruk

Translation:
“O Allah, we seek Your help and we seek Your forgiveness and we believe in You and we rely on You and we praise You for the good and we thank You and we do not disbelieve in You and we abandon and forsake those who disobey You.”

You can also say this Qunut Nazila when you are in trouble.

اللَّهُمَّ إنَّا نَسْتَعِينُكَ وَنَسْتَغْفِرُكَ وَنَسْتَهْدِيكَ وَنُؤْمِنُ بِكَ وَنَتَوَكَّلُ عَلَيْكَ وَنُثْنِي عَلَيْكَ الْخَيْرَ كُلَّهُ نَشْكُرَكَ وَلَا نَكْفُرُكَ وَنَخْلَعُ وَنَتْرُكُ مَنْ يَفْجُرُكَ
اللَّهُمَّ إيَّاكَ نَعْبُدُ وَلَك نُصَلِّي وَنَسْجُدُ وَإِلَيْكَ نَسْعَى وَنَحْفِدُ نَرْجُو رَحْمَتَك وَنَخْشَى عَذَابَكَ إنَّ عَذَابَك الْجِدَّ بِالْكُفَّارِ مُلْحَقٌ

Transliteration:
Allahumma innaa nasta‘iinuka wa nastaghfiruk, wa nastahdiika wa nu’minu bik wa natawakkalu alaik, wa nutsnii alaikal khaira kullahu nasykuruka wa laa nakfuruk, wa nakhla‘u wa natruku man yafjuruk.

Allahumma iyyaaka na‘budu, wa laka nushallii wa nasjud, wa ilaika nas‘aa wa nahfid, narjuu rahmataka wa nakhsyaa adzaabak, inna adzaabakal jidda bil kuffaari mulhaq.

Translation:
“O Allah, we really ask for Your help, ask for Your forgiveness, hope for Your guidance, believe in You, put our trust in You, praise You, give thanks and do not deny for all Your goodness, and we withdraw and leave those who disobey you.

O Allah, only you we worship, only to you we face this prayer and prostrate, only to you we walk and run. We hope for Your mercy. We are afraid of Your punishment because Your severe punishment will befall the disbelievers.”

Longer Version

You can also add this for a longer qunut nazilah:

• Allahumma a’izzal islaama wal muslimiin, wa adzillal mu’tadiinadzholimiin, wa dammir a’daikaa a’daa addiin, wa ngshurnaa ‘alaihim yaa robbal ‘aalamin,
• Allahumma ngsur ikhwaananaa fii kulli makaan, warfa’  ‘anhumul qohtho wal balaa’, wal harba wal i’tidaa’
• Allahumma laa tumakkinal a’daa-a  minnaa wa laa fiinaa wa laa tusallithhum ‘alainaa bidzunuubinaa
• Allahumma qinal aswaa-a wa laa taj’alnaa mahallal lilbawaa. Allahumma-ksyif  ‘annal balaa-a maa laa yaksyifhu ghairuk.

Other Duas Qunut

There are other duas called Qunut, like the Qunut of Witr, which is said after ruku’ in the last raka’ah of the Witr prayer.

Most scholars agree with this, except for the Malikis, who prefer to say it before ruku’.

The wording of Qunut Witr is as follows:

اللّٰهُمَّ اهْدِنِي فِيمَنْ هَدَيْت، وعافِنِي فِيمَنْ عافيت، وتولّنِي فِيمان تولّيت، وبارِك لي فيما أعطيت، وقِنِي شرّ ما قضيت، فإنّك تقضي ولا يقضى عليك، إنّه لا يذلّ من واليت، تباركت ربّنا وتعاليت

Transliteration:
Allahumma ihdini fiman hadayt, wa ‘afini fiman ‘afayt, wa tawallani fiman tawallayt, wa barik li fi ma a’tayt, wa qini sharra ma qadayt,

fa innaka taqdi wa la yuqda ‘alaik, innahu la yadhillu man walayt, tabarakta rabbana wa ta’alayt

Translation:
“O Allah, guide me among those whom You have guided, grant me health among those whom You have granted health, take me as an ally among those whom You have taken as allies, bless me in what You have given me, and protect me from the evil of what You have decreed.

For You decree and none can decree over You. And none can humiliate whom You have taken as an ally. Blessed are You, our Lord and Exalted.”

There are also other duas that are recited at certain times or in certain situations

Qunut al-Hajah (the Qunut of need), Qunut al-Janazah (the Qunut of funeral prayer), Qunut al-Istisqa (the Qunut of rain prayer), etc.

These are also valid forms of Qunut that can be recited with the appropriate wording and timing.

The Benefits of Duas Qunut

Duas Qunut is a way to show Allah that we are humble, dependent, and trust him. It is a way to ask for His help, protection, blessing, and forgiveness.

It is a way to thank Him for all the good things He has done. This is a way to express our concern and love for Muslim brothers and sisters who are going through tough times or being persecuted.

It’s a way to follow the Prophet’s (SAW) Sunnah, who taught us these beautiful prayers.

When we say Duas Qunut, we should do it with sincerity, focus, and devotion.

It’s important that we grasp the weight and import of our words. Having faith that Allah will hear our supplications and grant us relief is essential.

We should also do what we ask for and try to please Allah and be thankful.
